Daniels and Birdsell: Conservative stalwarts in NH Senate
EDITORIAL, UNION LEADER
In 2014, state Representatives Gary Daniels and Regina Birdsell gave up their seats to run for state Senate.
Voters rewarded their good service with promotions to the upper chamber. Both Daniels and Birdsell have repaid that trust and deserve reelection in November.
Daniels moved over from the House two years ago to represent Amherst, Merrimack, Milford and Wilton in the state Senate. He brought a wealth of experience from 18 years on the House Labor Committee, which he put to use helping to craft a bipartisan fix to New Hampshire’s skyrocketing workers’ compensation costs.
Reforming workers’ compensation for the first time in 20 years helped lower costs to New Hampshire businesses while ensuring that doctors and hospitals are paid fairly for the health care services they deliver.
Birdsell served two House terms before being elected to serve Derry, Hampstead and Windham. As a freshman senator, she chaired the Public Affairs and Municipal Affairs Committee, which tackled the thorny issue of voter residency in New Hampshire.
Birdsell’s thorough work produced a bill clarifying when new residents are eligible to vote in New Hampshire elections, putting an end to drive-by voting from short-term campaign staffers with no intentions of staying in the Granite State. Unfortunately, Gov. Maggie Hassan vetoed this common sense reform.
Gary Daniels and Regina Birdsell each deserve a return to the state Senate.
